In the period of shaping the trans-national formations, such as the
Organisation of the United Nations and the European Union, it is of
extreme importance that the Slovenian nation did not remain at a
sub-national level. For only as a nation with our own State could we,
Slovenians, become a sovereign actor in the international
relations. Had we not had our own national State, Slovenia could not
have become either a member of the Organisation of the United Nations,
nor of the European Union. In both cases, we would have been
represented by Yugoslavia, or rather, Srboslavia, while we would have
kept the position of a subject. The purpose of gaining independence is
to acquire the possibility of sovereign decision-making - even
sovereign deliberation about one's own sovereignty, about transferring
part of one's sovereignty, even if only for a while. After ten years
of successful progress, we now need to define precisely our
Euro-Slovenian character and, together with other European States, to
conceive our new global position.
